When you woke up this morning, what was your first thought?
*With heartache did you fret, “Oh no…it’s Monday?”
*Did you frantically question, “Do I have a pair of clean underwear?”
*Did you finally roll out of bed after hitting ‘snooze’ eight times?
*As you woke up, we’re you grateful?
I’ve discovered that the first attitude that I awaken to plays an incredible role in the rest of my day. If I wake up grumpy, sleep deprived, looking at the new day with an ill spirit, then my day will naturally fulfill that prophecy. However, if I awaken with a song in my soul and gratitude in my heart, my day can surprisingly rise to these internal expectations.
My morning routine helps create a proper rhythm for how my morning begins. I wake up anxious about opening the Word and spending time with my Father in prayer. I wake up delighted to have breakfast with my two year old over an episode of ‘Curious George’. When I wake up grateful for the opportunities, my attitude becomes a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy for my day.
However, when my head leaves the pillow unwillingly and my mind is burdened with the todos of the day, in an ungrateful way I tend to skip breakfast with my daughter, I neglect opening God’s word, and I convince myself that I’m too busy to pause for prayer (even pastors wrestle with this). Bottom line, I sometimes battle with a self-reliant attitude that says “I can do this on my own, so stay out of my way.”
But here’s the truth, when you wake up in the morning and you realize that you donʼt need God for everything (EVERYTHING)…when you’re convinced that youʼre set and that you can take a break from Him…then itʼs time to wake up and repent.
“But I will sing of your strength;
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.”
When we fully rely upon God…when Heʼs in control…then and only then will we become effective for His Kingdom.
The moment that the Church and His people are able to minister on our own without the help of God is the moment that God will close our door and the people of God will be ineffective!
So when you wake up tomorrow morning, how can your morning different than this morning? Decide today to wake up and identify yourself with Jesus, surrender to His Lordship, and take every step (especially your first step) by His direction.
