I’ve had the opportunity to read and review a pre-release copy of Wrecked by Jeff Goins. Jeff is missionary at heart. This brother loves Jesus and loves people and it’s evident in every word that his pen writes on the page. It’s a book about purpose, living life intentionally, and with passion. I too often move through life forgetting why I’m here doing what I do. This book was one of those sign-posts offering a simple passionate reminder.
What is Wrecked?
In his book, Jeff defines being “Wrecked” like this:
To be wrecked is to be disabused of the status quo. It means to have a transformation that goes beyond mere words-to be introduced to another way of life, to follow in the footsteps of a teacher who is calling you through the eye of a needle. Often it involves being catalyzed by an encounter with pain. (Page 32)
Listen, EVERYTHING Jeff writes is legit. I’ve been following his blog for about four months and I’ve devoured everything he’s written. His writing has reminded me once again to look outside my own little comfortable world and notice something larger. We need that reminder every once in a while.
Bottom line, “If we are to follow the Jesus who suffered with us and bled for us, we too must suffer. We must hold the dying in our arms. We must shed tears for hungry souls. This is what He wants for us. It’s the reason we are called to lay down our nets and take up our crosses to pursue the Suffering Servant. And it’s the one thing we will avoid at all costs.” (page 40)
I’ve had a few “wrecked” moments in my life. Leaving home and moving into an unknown city into an unknown college around a campus full of people I don’t know. Spending two weeks in the bush country of Jamaica hold revivals and Vacation Bible Schools wrecked me for a season of life. Living in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for the summer before my senior year of college totally wrecked me for a while. The birth of my first daughter continues to wreck me still to this day.
These were moments of great trial that caused an enormous amount of stress and required incredible energy. It would have been easy to walk away…give up…throw in the towel…quit. But I’m so glad I wrestled through and endured because the fruit that these moments have produced are of great value.
This is, after all, what it means to be wrecked – to intentionally step into discomfort and live in that tension. (Page 120)
